Henderson History
Henderson is one of the
fastest-growing cities in the United States. Located southeast of Las
Vegas near Lake Mead and Boulder City, Henderson is Nevada's
second-largest city, and it boasts the highest per capita median
household income in Southern Nevada.
The community developed in the shadow of the Basic Magnesium Plant,
which supplied the nation with raw materials for munitions and airplane
parts during World War II. After the war, the plant closed and
Henderson's growth slowed for several years.
In the late 1970s, the master-planned community of Green
Valley was established in Henderson and southeast Las Vegas. Green
Valley
is known for its high-quality, family-oriented lifestyle. Schools in
the area are among the best in the Clark County School District, and
Green Valley High School was named one of the top 10 U.S. high schools
in 1997.
Henderson is now home to nearly 25 master-planned
communities. Some of the most popular include Anthem, Seven Hills,
Green Valley Ranch, MacDonald Ranch and Lake Las Vegas.
Activities
Henderson is located between the bright lights of Las Vegas and the
soothing waves of Lake Mead, which offer a variety of entertainment and
recreation options. But Henderson has plenty of activities of its own
for locals and tourists alike.
The city has 35 parks, several recreation centers and two aquatic
complexes. There are dozens of walking trails as well as opportunities
for hiking, biking and jogging.
Henderson is home to seven public golf courses: Black Mountain, Desert
Willow, Lake Las Vegas, Legacy, Seven Hills, Wild Horse and the Revere
at Anthem.
Galleria at Sunset
has more than 130 shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. And just
down the road, Ethel M Chocolates offers free factory tours — and free
samples! — amid a beautifully landscaped cactus garden.
McCaw Elementary School is site of the nation's only "working mine"
exhibit. Children can pan for gold, walk through "underground tunnels"
and view a simulated open-pit mining operation.
Each year, Shakespeare in the Park brings the best of the Bard to
Southern Nevada. Other cultural events and activities include Theater
in the Valley, Concerts Under the Stars, the Henderson Civic Symphony,
the Missoula Children's Theater and the popular Art Fest exhibition.
